Today we put thirteen eggs into the incubator.  We put some water in the bottom trays to help keep the air moist.  We watch the temperature closely, and keep it right at 100 degrees.  Twice a day we will turn the eggs, just as a mother hen would do.  On or around May 1st, we hope to have some chickens hatching!

A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Seelye for bringing us eggs to hatch!

We celebrated a month of reading today with some crazy dancing to songs about animals!
"Who let the dogs out?!?!"

Then we curled up with some books (and maybe a furry friend) to read!

We all love finding a cozy spot and a good book!

What a great way to spend some time!

All the students who completed their reading month calendars got to pick out a brand new book to keep!

Finally, Mrs. Mayne read the class a great book about a dog!

We were so glad when Alfie found a home at the end of the story!!

Hooray for reading!!

For part of our "Paws for Reading" Reading Month events, today we had some amazing frisbee dogs come visit the Early Elementary!

These dogs were sooooo cool!!

They did way more than just catch frisbees!
They could jump so high and balance and run so fast!

We really enjoyed seeing them and learning about the training they go through to learn these amazing tricks!

Yesterday, we were learning about stems and we talked about what we already know about stems.  We realized that scientists have to be able to PROVE what they know or think through experiments.  We thought long and hard about what we could do to PROVE that stems take water and nutrients from the roots or the ground to the leaves or fruits.  We all decided that putting the stems in water would be a great first step but we couldn't think of a way to make it SHOW that the stem sucked up the water.

Mrs. Koehn challenged us to think of how we might use food coloring to prove our point.  Some of us predicted the food coloring would keep the water from evaporating in the jars and then if the water level went down it had to be due to the stem.  Others of us thought the food coloring would make the water too thick to go up the stems.

As it turns out, the food coloring PROVED that the stems sucked the water up and delivered it to the petals!  We were so excited to see the results of our experiment today and to know that we found a way to have PROOF as scientists!
