The BUGS have earned 25 compliments from other teachers for doing things like walking quietly in the hallway, or behaving well at music or art.  They chose to have an extra recess as their reward today and it was a great way to celebrate!

Now the BUGS have challenged themselves to earn 30 compliments next time!

Today we were working on becoming authors - we are so excited about this journey!  We have learned about nouns and verbs and we know that a simple sentence needs both!  We have been learning about adjectives and how they help to make our sentences more interesting.  Now we are going to start putting together our amazing sentences into stories!

We are starting off with "personal narratives" which means we are writing about something that actually happened to us (how interesting!)  We realized one of the hardest parts about writing is thinking up an idea, so we BrAiNsToRmEd!!

We let ideas swirl around our minds and then we captured some of the best ones.  We kept in mind who we are writing for (audience) and what they might want to hear about.

When we got a few ideas down, we picked the VERY BEST ONE as our first writing topic!  YIPPEE!!

For those of you using the Spelling Word List Power Point Presentations (well, they are actually Google Presentations, but you get the idea) on the website to practice spelling words, we are on list #10 this week.  We jumped ahead as I'm noticing a lot of students don't know the Stealer C and G patterns from last year, so I want to get those solidified before we move on with our next syllable type.

:)

P.S.  If you're NOT using the Presentations for your child to practice spelling words/sight words, you should check them out!  They are here.

Today we set out on a mission!
We wanted to see if we could figure out how many sounds the letter 'c' makes and if there's any pattern to when it makes certain sounds.

The Word Detectives were hot on the case, searching for words that had the letter 'c' in them and writing them down!

Then we made charts to figure out the pattern.  Hmm...this took a lot of thinking!

Finally, we found a pattern!  Aha!!  We now know that the Super Secret Stealer C Code is...

(Did you really think we were just going to tell you?!  You need to discover it for yourself!)

Can you tell what a 'c' will say just by the pattern?

What will it say in "cat"?
How about "crumple"?
What about "city"?
Or ...

"bicycle"?!?

Hmm...it's going to take some thinking, isn't it?!

If YOU know the Super Secret Stealer C Code, let us know in the comments!
We'd like to know if you found the pattern, too!

Our first "Families Invited!" Sharing Day was scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, but we learned that second grade will be walking to the Middle School tomorrow afternoon (weather permitting) to hear the high school band play!  While we are disappointed, we are rescheduling for next Friday, October 10th at 3:00.  If you are able and interested in attending, please mark your calendar and come hear the plays, book reviews, journal pages and other demonstrations of our learning!  (If you can't make it, don't worry, we will always post pictures!)

We've been doing two interesting things lately (well, more than that, but for the purpose of this post...) 1) we've been reading Charlotte's Web, and 2) we've been talking about adjectives.  It turns out that the part of the book we're reading is when Charlotte is asking her barnyard friends for suggestions on a new adjective to put in her web that describes Wilbur (and might help save his life!)  We were eager to help Charlotte and so we created our own lists of adjectives that we thought were perfect for a pig like Wilbur.  We wrote about why we chose those particular words and how they described him well and then we used tagxedo.com to create some adjective artwork!!!

This is a sample of what we created:

Now, to truly appreciate what the kids did today, you should see our hallway!

Stop by and see what ideas we have about Wilbur!
(And come listen to the next chapter when we find out what word Charlotte chose!)
