Congratulations, Taya!!

This week we worked on an opinion writing.

We read a book and talked about the weather for the month of March.
Then we made predictions (we're getting really good at those!) about March's weather, in particular, if it will come in like a lion or a lamb!

When our writing was done, we finished the activity by making a lion or lamb to go with it.

(Mrs. Koehn let us use drippy glue AND paint - her two least favorite things!)
Stop by our classroom hallway to see our predictions and our creatures!!

We had a few predictions of March coming in like a lamb...

...maybe we're all just tired of snow days?

Most students predicted March will come in like a lion!

Guess we might as well get it over with and then move on to spring!

Something mysterious is happening!  When we opened up the jar labeled "no air", there was a sprout!  We have been reading about plants and we KNOW that they need air to live!
Think like a scientist and make a hypothesis about how this sprout is growing even when the lid has been on the jar.

I stopped by school on my way to the play this weekend.  I wanted to check on our sprouts and make sure they had enough water for the long weekend.  Something is growing in Room 18!

Yesterday these carnations were white.  What happened?
Explain the experiment as a scientist using facts and observations.

(Check out the comments for thoughts from the scientific BUGS!)

For Valentine's Day, we enjoyed time celebrating friendship and fun.

Everyone exchanged valentine cards and we enjoyed ice cream sundaes together!

It's nice to take a break from all the learning and just have some fun!

We played some "Minute-to-Win-It" Games, too.  Like "Through Thick and Thin"...

...where you had to get as many rotini noodles (thick) onto a fettucini noodle (thin) without using your hands!

It takes patience!

...slow and steady...

It's harder than you might think!

But some of the BUGS got really good at it!

We also played "Heart-A-Stack" where we used conversation hearts to make the tallest tower we could.

Don't bump the table!

We played "Smile!"  We used a straw to suck up m&ms and make a smilie face out of them.

You only have a minute, so you have to move fast!

We saw a lot of smiles when it was all over!

We also played "Stack Attack" with stacking cups.

You had to move really fast and get the cups lined up just perfectly to get all 21 in a pyramid before the timer went off!

We also played "Going Steady" with Fruit Loops and a popsicle stick.  How many do you think you can balance in one minute?

Finally, we played "That's the Way the Cookie Tumbles".  Can you get a Nilla Wafer from your forehead to your mouth without your hands?  McKenna can!

Thanks to all the parent helpers who helped keep the chaos down to a minimum (relatively speaking!)  Happy Valentine's Day!

Taylor earned a special button for her awesome score on her mah test.  Then she earned an AR button!  Awesome job showing all you've been learning, Taylor!!

Today we learned about roots.  We thought about what we already knew about roots and then what we wanted to learn.  We talked for quite awhile about what kind of experiment would let us SEE roots grow!
We finally thought about putting seeds into clear growing containers so we can watch!

We planted root vegetables in these tubes (Thanks, Mr. Kenyon!) so we can watch them grow!

We can't wait to see them!

We also planted a lima bean against the clear glass of a jar so we could watch it sprout!  We thought this would give us a great view of the roots as they grow as well as the sprouts!

We drew pictures for our science journals of what we think roots look like.

We had some great ideas and prior knowledge about roots!

We are excited to see how our thoughts and drawings compare to real roots that we grow!

Today we had visitors from Paw Paw Township and the Water Conservation Authority who taught us about groundwater, water towers and aquifers.
We learned about the Paw Paw Water Tower and how many gallons of water it holds.
We got to see why the tower has to be so tall to get water to come out of the hydrants in case of a fire.

We even got to see how contaminants in one area can affect the water in other wells and ground water!!

We even got to make edible aquifers!
What a tasty way to learn about science!!
