We have been working during our small reading groups on some comprehension strategies and skills. We've focused on identifying the main character of a fictional text as well as any other characters involved in the story. We've worked on understanding what the overall setting of the story is and how it relates to the story. We've also worked on identifying what happens in the beginning, middle and end of a story and how the sequence is important.
Today, the class took their first reading assessment. I call this a "chance to show off" as I want the kids to show me what they have learned (and what they still need help learning). Students chose a "Goldilocks" level book (not too easy, not too hard, but just right) from a selection of texts, read the chosen text and then answered a few questions about it.
I am really excited about building on prior knowledge and deepening our understanding of books and the information/stories they tell!
